Our Story

We’re a young farming family, and after years of applications, hard work, and hoping for the opportunity to find a place of our own within the Lake District, we were incredibly fortunate to become the tenants of High Oxen Fell Farm.

Taking on a National Trust tenancy has been a dream come true and a privilege we never take for granted. We feel incredibly lucky to care for such a special place, with its rich history, breathtaking landscape, and traditional buildings that have stood here for generations.

Farm life is at the heart of everything we do. From looking after our herd of Luing cattle and our Cheviot and Herdwick sheep, to working with the seasons and caring for the land around us, this is a way of life we are passionate about preserving and sharing with others.

High Oxen Fell Farm is a place of history, hard work, and quiet beauty. It is our family home, a working hill farm, and a place we are incredibly proud to look after.

Our philosophy is simple: preserve rather than replace. We want to protect the character and charm that make these buildings so special, carefully restoring them with respect for their history while keeping the unique details that tell their story. From original features and traditional craftsmanship to the little quirks that make each stay memorable such as Eric, our eco compost loo at High Hallgarth! we believe comfort doesn’t have to come at the expense of authenticity.

Opening the doors to High Hallgarth and our future accommodation on the farm is our way of allowing others to experience the magic of this place while helping us continue to care for it. We have chosen to take bookings directly through our own website, allowing us to keep prices as fair as possible for our guests, avoid unnecessary booking fees, and offer a more personal experience from the first enquiry through to your arrival.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. By staying with us, you’re not only enjoying a slower, simpler way of life in the Lake District—you’re also helping to support the future of a working Lakeland farm and the ongoing care of these historic places.
